The Secret of the "FREE" Home Security System

!±8± The Secret of the "FREE" Home Security System

I know you have seen the ads for the free security systems. If you really think you can get good security protection for "free" you might be a little disappointed when you see what you are getting. That is if the company actually reveals what you are getting before it is installed. Most of the time they won't.

Many of the "free" systems are an all in one wireless system, usually with two door contacts and a motion detector. What's wrong with that? They give a false sense of security. They are very vulnerable and you have limited protection devices. They will charge extra for additional door contacts, motion detectors, CO detectors, etc.. They also have the brains, keypad, dialer and siren all in one unit. If a burglar breaks in all he has to do is rip the keypad off the wall and the system is disabled. It's not hard to find the keypad; it will be the thing making noise. It is much better to have the dialer, keypad and siren in different locations.

Many companies offer the "free" wireless alarm systems because it takes almost no skill to install. Most, if not all, of the programming can be done prior to installation. All the installer has to do is sticky tape the door contacts and motion detector in place, mount the unit and get a power wire and phone wire to it. Usually they mount the unit above a phone jack that has an outlet close by. Many of these installers will be low paid untalented individuals. Good techs are well paid so these companies usually don't hire them.

You should own your alarm equipment. Most of the free systems remain the property of the alarm company. You can't switch monitoring companies if you're not happy with their service, or want to shop around for a better monitoring rate. More than likely they are going to want a long term, auto renewing contract with a high monthly rate. If you try to change monitoring companies you will most likely find that the system is locked out and will have to be replaced. Some companies will even remotely kill you system so you can't use it.

Not all of the "free" home security systems are the wireless all in one units. There is a major national security company that advertises an 0 system for free. You just have to pay to have it installed. They fail to mention that you have to pay 9 up front plus a connection fee. You have to wait a couple of weeks to get a coupon to fill out and send in with a copy of your contract for a refund. You then wait a couple of months to get 0 back. You are stuck with a 3 year auto renewing contract for or more a month and they still own the equipment.

The "Free" System Offer Gets Their Foot In The Door. As I mentioned earlier, you probably will not have adequate protection with the amount of sensors offered for free so they will almost always try to sell you extra sensors for to 0 each. They also want extra money each month to monitor these extra devices. Some companies will charge you extra for using their 800 number for the alarm panel to dial into.

"Free" security systems will almost always end up costing more than paying for a system up front. If you want a "free" security system then expect to pay much more per month for the monitoring service. Security companies vary widely in the way they price their products. Usually you can find a company to install a system for 0-0 for the same thing as a "free" system and usually they will monitor for or less. So for that extra up front money, you get a system you own, that is a lot less vulnerable, more reliable and gives you the freedom to shop around for better service or lower rates.
